“Life’s Like Elastic” also known as Think About All The Plastic, by Philip Hambling is a song that was created to draw the attention of the general public to the problem of plastic pollution. Although it has a fun, catchy, upbeat instrumental, its message is clearly the most important aspect of the song. Plastic pollution is one of the most widespread problems that affect the marine environment today, it threatens oceans, food safety and quality, human health, tourism and contributes to climate change. In Canada, less than 11% of plastic is actually recycled or reused, contributing vastly to the world’s plastic pollution problem that exists today.

Although plastic is quite the convenient material, it has quite a dark side, where single-use plastics account for 40% of the plastic produced yearly, this means that once they are used they are tossed away and never thought about after. The lyrics of the song speak to this problem, where Philip says, “It’s choking the oceans. It’s filling the sea. It’s washed up on beaches. Even hanging from the trees”. You can see the impacts of plastic pollution everywhere, even if you live nowhere near an ocean or a large body of water. You can see it on the sidewalks, the grass, the roads, basically, everywhere you look you can see some amount of plastic that was not properly thrown away. One of the most interesting parts of the song is when Philip talked about how much whales ingest plastic and that it is leading to numerous deaths of these marine mammals, the video encompasses pictures that really develop the emotions prevalent within the song. That being said, what can you do to make a difference?
