Giddy Up!

Horses are my favorite animals on the land so when I decided to look at an animal in the ocean, I wanted to learn more about seahorses.  Did you know that seahorses are a type of fish??!!

In reading about seahorses, I found it very interesting that the male seahorse carries the babies for 9 – 45 days until they hatch from the eggs they carry around in their pouch.  If two seahorses find each other and really like each other they will stay together for the rest of their lives.

Seahorses usually stay by themselves instead of being in schools or packs.  I think that is because predators can’t find them easily if they are alone.  If a predator were to come up to them, they can change color to blend in.  Crabs, sharks and birds are predators of the seahorse.

I like to eat my food very fast but I think the seahorse is faster.  They eat baby fish and shrimp but since they don’t have a stomach they need to eat all of the time.

Some species of seahorse can grow up to a foot long and they are the only fish that wrap their tail around things.  This is how some seahorses can travel around the ocean because they grab on to sea weed and debris.

I started looking at the seahorses because I really love horses but they are very different animals.  I don’t think that I will ever be able to ride them but I hope to meet one someday.
